I’ve been at UW-Eau Claire for a few years now, but it wasn’t until last night that I finally made it to Cabaret. For those of you who don’t know, Cabaret is a large performance including four of the choirs at UW-Eau Claire. More or less, it’s a big show choir. I’m really glad that I went to see it, and a little upset with myself for not seeing it earlier.
The theme this year was Careers, so with 10 students directors and a cast of 130 musicians, Concert Choirs I and II, Woman’s Concert Chorale and the Singing Statesmen put on a great show that involved great music, dancing and even some comedy. The music they feature include all genres and from all eras. They were also focused around careers (hence the theme), including zoo keeper, astronaut, psychologist etc. Each choir gets a set in each act. These sets include 2 to 4 songs that have been arranged and choreographed by students. There are also some great solo acts and comedic interludes that introduce the upcoming job.
Cabaret is not a typical performance, though. Council Fire in the Davies Center is completely decked out with long tables, so it almost feels like a dinner club. There are a variety of drinks and desserts available.
If this sounds like something you’re interested in, there are 4 performances this weekend. Thursday, January 26 at 7:30 PM, Friday, January 27 at 7:30 PM, Saturday, January 28 at 2 PM AND Saturday, January 28 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available at the Service Desk in Davies or check out the website http://www.uwec.edu/Mus-The/choir/cabaret/tickets.htm.
